What is an RVT?
Registered Veterinary Technician "RVT" is a designated title in Ontario and may be used by only those technicians:
  • Who have graduated from an OAVT accredited/approved college and have passed the examination recognized by the OAVT board of Directors.
  • Who are and continue to be members in good standing
  • Who maintain the mandatory Continuing Education Component
What is a Veterinary Technician?
Veterinary Technicians are specifically trained professionals who work as an integral part of the veterinary medical team, to provide humane quality animal health care. Their education provides them with the theory and practical skills essential to their career choice.
  • assist in surgical procedures
  • sterile preparation of the surgical patient
  • administer and monitor various anaesthestics
  • emergency, intensive and basic nursing care
  • perform diagnostic laboratory procedures - such as hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, bacteriology
  • administer medications and treatment as prescribed by the attending veterinarian
  • expose and develop radiographs
  • clinical pathology - perform post mortems, etc.
  • dental prophylaxis
  • nutritional management
  • restrain and handle animals
  • maintain animal husbandry
  • public education, client relations
  • business management / administration
